Non-Instructed Advocacy (NIA)
Non-Instructed Advocates (NIA’s) work with people who do not use language to communicate or find it difficult to say want they want. ![]()
NIA’s will go and meet the person.
![]()
NIA’s will watch the person to learn more about them.
NIA’s will then talk to the person’s family and people who live and work with them.![]()
NIA’s are independent. This means that they are only working for the person, not thier family or the staff.
An Example of NIA work:
A client did not want to go to a day centre.![]()
The NIA went to see them at the day centre and at some other places.![]()
This helped the NIA to see where the client liked to be and what they wanted to do.![]()
The NIA talked to the staff and told them what they thought.
